Industrial Water Softening via Ion Exchange

High-quality process water and boiler feedwater are essential for the safe and economical operation of thermal systems. Water softening systems prevent scale formation and limescale deposits in heat exchangers, steam boilers, and piping systems. This reduces energy losses, lowers maintenance costs, and extends equipment service life.

RWT GmbH designs, supplies, and maintains custom-built water softening systems for industrial, power generation, and commercial applications. Depending on water quality and demand, single or duplex systems with automatic regeneration are employed.

Advantages of Industrial Water Softening Systems
- Protection against scale formation and limescale deposits
- Improved energy efficiency
- Reduced maintenance and operating costs
- Extended service life of heat exchangers and piping systems
- High system availability

Water Softening Process

In water softening via ion exchange, calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium ions. To achieve this, the water is passed through a strongly acidic cation exchange resin loaded with sodium ions.

Raw water → Cation exchanger → Softened water → Regeneration with saline solution

However, the total salt content of the water remains virtually unchanged.
In the case of hard water, softening is advisable wherever heat exchangers, steam boilers, or production facilities need to be protected from limescale deposits.

Typical applications
- Process water treatment
- Boiler feedwater
- Steam boiler systems
- Cooling water
- Chemical industry
- Pharmaceutical industry
- Food and beverage industry
- Power generation and power plants

Centralised softening of drinking water

In the centralized softening of drinking water, processes such as rapid decarbonization or nanofiltration/reverse osmosis are used. The choice of process depends on the water composition, the desired initial and target hardness levels, and the volume of water to be softened. In the drinking water supply sector, complete softening is not the goal. When ion exchange systems (common among end users) or reverse osmosis systems are used, this is achieved through bypass controls.
